20 July 2022 (Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental) -  SEARICE farmer and CSO partners from Visayas gathered in the Central Philippine State University (CPSU) for a regional forum on farmers’ rights with the theme “Mula sa Pagbaybay Tungo sa Pagkilos”. An introduction to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) and a discussion on critical issues on the upcoming 9th GB of International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant Treaty) were delivered by SEARICE Program Officer for Policy, Cid Ryan Manalo. Meanwhile SEARICE Executive Director, Normita Ignacio emphasized the discussions tangent on farmers’ rights in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Atty. Joy Angelica Santos-Doctor presented the surfeit of national laws in the Philippines.

In between these presentations, our partners shared their insights, raised critical questions on the future of agriculture in the country, and took on the challenge to continue advocating for the rights of peasants. The one-day forum was joined by farmers from Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, and Aklan. We also send our gratitude to the dedicated people and staff of CPSU, the local government of Kabankalan City, and Social Action Centers from Bohol and Bacolod.

You can check the photo documentation of the activity from the SEARICE staff.
