Poised to Change

Things are poised to change for the farmers of Bac Lieu in Viet Nam. Farmers in this province used to buy seeds from seed companies every season, costing them significant amount of money. But that is soon to change. Through the farmers field school participatory plant breeding (FFS-PBB) on waxy maize introduced by SEARICE, MDI Can Tho University, the farmers have learned how to set their own breeding objectives and conduct actual open pollinated variety (OPV) maize breeding.

Because of this intervention, farmers realized that they are capable of developing their own variety and/or improve their existing cultivars.

Now, farmers are initiating their own maize breeding program in their own farms and even planning to market it at the local level.
